Cinema is a matter of what‘s in the frame and what’s out.

Martin Scorsese

Short Film Director

In one of the 2020 lockdowns, a new creative opportunity opened up for me. I was asked to direct two short films. For a huge cinema lover, it has been amazing for me to begin to work as a director in this medium, being an admirer of feature film directors including Bennett Miller, Christopher Nolan, Jacques Audiard, Jeff Nichols, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. Chandor, Denis Villeneuve, David Fincher, and Martin Scorsese.

As I’ve begun directing short films, this has seen me focus on my process as a theatre director where I work closely with actors to release the performer’s freedom on stage in order to create visceral, emotional characters. I took this process into my work with the actors in the short films I’ve directed. Another element of the film-making process that was a brilliant new experience for me was the collaboration I had with my cinematographers. Through my interest in photography over the past few years, I have been fascinated by exploring what is shown in the frame when I take a photograph. This fascination led to some brilliant discussions with the directors of photography I have collaborated with to date.
