Cinema is a matter of what‘s in the frame and what’s out.

Short Film Directing

In the midst of 2020’s lockdown, a new creative avenue opened up for me. I was asked to direct two short films. For a huge cinema-lover – as shown in the blog I write JSHmoviestuff – it has been amazing for me to begin to work as a director on film.

Being an admirer of film directors such as Jeff Nichols, Jacques Audiard, Bennett Miller, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, and Martin Scorsese lead me to focus on my process as a theatre director as I started to direct on film. As in theatre, where I work closely with actors to release the performer’s freedom on stage in order to create visceral, emotional characters, I took this process across into my work with the actors on the short films. Also, an element of the film-making process that was a brilliant new experience for me, was the collaboration I had with my cinematographers. I am now eager to direct more short films and hope to have the opportunity to do so in the very near future.

Below are links to more information on the short films I’ve directed to date.
