In the midst of 2020’s lockdown, a new creative opportunity opened up for me. I was asked to direct two short films. For a huge cinema-lover – as shown in the blog I write JSHmoviestuff – it has been amazing for me to begin to work as a director in this medium.
Being an admirer of feature film directors such as Bennett Miller, Jeff Nichols, Jacques Audiard, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. Chandor, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, and Martin Scorsese has seen me focus on my process as a theatre director as I start to direct on short films. As in theatre, where I work closely with actors to release the performer’s freedom on stage in order to create visceral, emotional characters, I took this process across into my work with the actors on these films.
Also, an element of the film-making process that was a brilliant new experience for me was the collaboration I had with my cinematographers. Through my interest in photography over the past few years, I have been fascinated by exploring what is shown in the frame when I take a photograph. This fascination led to some brilliant discussions with the directors of photography I collaborated with. I am now eager to direct more short films and hope to have the opportunity to do so in the very near future.
