by Julia Stubbs Hughes, based on the novelette by Anais Nin
She is a film star. Her face on the screen is a beautiful mask on which men must imprint their fantasies.
But the screen Stella is free, whereas in life she must deal with her married lover Bruno, a new man Philip, and the abiding memory of a powerful figure from her past.
Whilst working on my second play Hamlet our brother I came across Stella, a novelette by the celebrated author and diarist Anais Nin first published in the 1945 edition of her book Winter of Artifice.
Fascinated by the evocative writing and the main character’s journey, I contacted The Anais Nin Trust to gain their permission to adapt the story for theatre. Having been granted the rights, I’m currently in development with this new play.
